Mary became the self-taught teddy bear artist, who labors under the name of
"Pochung Mountain Bears". Living in the Pochung Mountains of New Jersey, where real
bears are frequent visitors, it seemed the perfect name for her new business. During a very
successful career in real estate, she happened upon a teddy bear magazine. This led to the
purchase of her first bear, a Merrythought, who was quickly joined by a second...her first
handmade artist bear. As her fascination grew, she began thinking she could make her own bears,
and in 1994, she did just that. Not one to fool around, Mary's first creation was made of mohair! She
specializes in "guy' bears on all fours, uses only the finest quality materials, and loves to experiment
with new designs and wild colors.
Traveling to teddy bear shows, making bears, and fighting to protect the
wild ones takes most of her time. Since she works alone, doing everything from design to the last
stitch on her noses, her production is limited.
Originally fron New York, Mary lives with her husband, Rich, her last daughter of
four, still at home, a couple of parrots, a dog, a cat and a most loved ferret. She has alot of love in her
soul. She shares it with family, pets and still has enough left to put into her bears.
We met at Mary's second bear show, which was my first, back in 1994. The Pochung Mountain bears
became part of my shoppe. Mary is a treasure and so are her teddies!
