Susan McKay and her husband, Mark, make their home in Toronto, Ontario,
Canada. A nurse by profession, Susan was introduced to the bear world at a
bear-making workshop in a nearby teddy bear store. Igniting her interest, a
hobby grew into a calling, which turned into a career.Susan and Mark
McKay founded Bears of the Abbey in 1992. They have participated in a great
number of shows across Canada and the United States. They have hosted
educational workshops at bear conventions across Canada and the United
States and have also started a teddy bear show promotion company, Teddy
Bears on Vacation.
Susan won the prestigious TOBY AWARD in 1999 for her creation,"Yanni". She
listens to Yanni's music, exclusively, as she creates her bears, and her work
shows her joy in both his music and what she creates.
I met Susan and Mark in 1995 at a show in New Jersey. I loved Susan's work
and looked forward to the time I could include it in the collection at the shoppe.
Being a new shoppe in 1994, it took awhile to build the artist collection. In 1999
I finally achieved a goal to have her wonderful work. Her bears and other
creations are now a welcome addition.
