The Teddy Bear Shoppe Of The Poconos

IRENE WEISER
CREATOR OF "SOMEBODY'S GRANDMA" OF PENNSYLVANIA

In the spring of 1995, meeting Irene Weiser was the high-point of my first "Artist" teddy bear show, There were about seventy-five artists displaying their bears at the show. Having never been to such a show, it was overwhelming. There was "a kid in a candy shop" kind of euphoria. As Danny and I walked each isle, I began picking up business cards for the artists I particularly liked.

In the third isle, we met Irene. The bond was instant...not only with her bears, but with this warm, happy soul. Her giggles were endearing and I remember thinking that she sparkled.

The black bears, for which she is known, were displayed in a tree with branches that her husband had made for her. Momma bear sat, ever watchful, beneath the tree, while several of her cubs frolicked in the branches. We ordered some of her bears for the shoppe, and have always had trouble keeping them in stock. They touch a place in your heart and you just have to take them home.

Irene is making fewer bears, now, as she is following her dream of writing. I fully expect she will be a famous novelist, before long. Having read a few samples of her work, there is no doubt. Sadly, this leaves less time for bearmaking.

Occasionally she makes my day by bringing some bears to be adopted. The time has come to plead for more!!

Irene has become a dear friend. She is one of the unique people, who brings out the best in everyone. Someday, we will be able to run out of things to share, but I hope it is in some forever future!
